Acupuncture for Fertility and Conception

Baby's hand.Chinese medicine puts a lot of emphasis on achieving a healthy body and balanced Qi, as well as on preparation of a healthy womb and eggs in women and of sperm in men before attempting conception.

Depending on particular circumstances, I recommend that couples begin acupuncture treatment at least 3 to 6 months before actively trying to conceive, whether naturally or with the help of IVF. Over the years I – and most acupuncture practitioners all over the world – have found that this approach significantly increases chances of conceiving and sustaining pregnancy whilst preventing miscarriage.

Treatment for women

If needed, we focus acupuncture treatment on resolving conditions such as:

  • blocked Fallopian tubes
  • endometriosis
  • fibroids
  • follicular or luteal phase imbalance (defect)
  • high FSH levels
  • irregular or absent menstrual periods
  • irregular or absent ovulation
  • Polycystic Ovaries Syndrome (PCOS)
  • threatened or recurrent miscarriage

IVF

Acupuncture treatment has also been shown to be of great support during IVF protocols and other Assisted Reproductive Techniques (IUI or ICSI), assisting embryo implantation with pre- and post-embryo transfer treatments and alleviating adverse effects of IVF drug regimes such as anxiety, insomnia and fluid retention.

Treatment for men Male patient being treated with acupuncture.

Male infertility seems to be rising and is said to be the cause of difficulties in conceiving in some 40% of cases.

Acupuncture is of great help in improving quality, volume and motility of sperm as well as in treating impotence. Because of the long development cycle of sperm, I recommend men have acupuncture treatment at least 2 to 3 months before attempting conception.
