Pre-prepared Chinese Herbal Remedies

Depending on your condition, I may also recommend a pre-prepared herbal remedy (often called patent remedy) to be taken every day to support acupuncture treatment.

Patent remedies are traditional, classical herbal formulas based on the principles of Chinese Medicine where the ingredients have, in general, remained unchanged for centuries. Some formulas have been modified to reflect the changes in current diseases or to alleviate side effects of modern conventional treatments e.g. chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Modern patent remedies available in Britain do not contain any ingredients of animal or mineral origin – these ingredients have been substituted with herbs of equivalent function.

Patent remedies commonly come in the form of pills or capsules which makes them easy and convenient to take. Because they are absorbed slowly in the digestive system, they have a prolonged therapeutic effect.

They are rarely used on their own – usually only as an adjunct to acupuncture, addressing some aspects of the patient’s disharmony that need more regular (usually daily) or long-term attention. Patent remedies are useful in many situations, for example, when the patient needs sustained, gentle, long-term tonification alongside acupuncture, or in acute cases of colds or respiratory infections when it is not always practical to come for acupuncture treatment.

All pre-prepared herbal remedies I use in my practice come from herbal suppliers approved by the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM) and conform to internationally agreed Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards of quality – of selection and preparation of the herbs themselves as well as of packaging and labelling. Compliance with GMP ensures that pre-prepared herbal remedies are free from contamination with heavy metals or pharmaceutical drugs.
